If you’re considering a potentially life-changing surgery, such as rhinoplasty, it’s natural to wonder, “Will it be worthwhile?” You’ll be happy to know that for the vast majority of rhinoplasty patients, the answer is “Yes!”

We know because we always ask our patients! At Cohen/Winters in Bergen County, NJ, we see patients every day who give us a huge smile when their splint is removed and never stop smiling–as their nose begins looking better and better, every day thereafter.

Rhinoplasty is Safe and Worthwhile – When You Choose Your Surgeon Wisely

However, as you are doubtlessly aware, there are a number of people who unfortunately undergo rhinoplasty with disappointing results. These people often have to see a new surgeon and have their original (primary) rhinoplasty corrected with a procedure called revision rhinoplasty.

We see many of these individuals, too, and are typically able to improve their earlier botched nose jobs and achieve the attractive look they had wanted in the first place. In order for your rhinoplasty experience to be worthwhile, and done right the first time, you must choose your surgeon carefully.

The biggest predictor of a happy result from rhinoplasty is the surgeon’s experience — and clear communication between surgeon and patient. This boils down to choosing the most experienced plastic surgeon (one who spends the majority of their time focused onrhinoplasty,) and choosing the surgeon with whom you communicate best.

NYC = Expensive

Choose an elite and extremely well qualified reconstructive plastic surgeon, no matter if the practice is located inside or outside NYC. Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure requiring gentle and precise surgical technique for optimal results– so the individual surgeon who is the right surgeon for you matters much more than the location or the price tag.

It certainly makes sense to give yourself the widest pool to choose from when considering rhinoplasty in NYC. Don’t restrict yourself to just Manhattan, expand your search to a few local zip codes — because you need not just a talented and experienced surgeon, but also the one who’s perfect for you.

Give yourself the opportunity to find the right surgeon and to avoid inflated Manhattan-based pricing. Although we don’t advocate searching for a rhinoplasty surgeon based on price, restricting your search to NYC may be just asking to pay more than necessary — without receiving better care.

When You Find the Right One, You’ll Know

When you select an experienced rhinoplasty specialist, one who takes time to understand your needs and desires, and who explains the intended surgical plan clearly, you are on your way to a great (and very worthwhile) rhinoplasty result. When you find the right surgeon, you will likely feel some of your anxiety about undergoing rhinoplasty will slip away.

That’s because when you meet a skilled and experienced rhinoplasty surgeon who talks with you openly and honestly, you’ll feel a sense of confidence and trust. You will realize that the surgeon understands what your goal for rhinoplasty is, because he or she will explain the plan to achieve your goal.

Check Qualifications First, the Evaluate Communication

After you have checked a plastic surgeon’s board certification and state licensure with the state of NY or NJ, this will tell you if it is worthwhile to meet with that surgeon. Then, after discussing your needs and desires for your new nose, as well as viewing pictures of past patients (before and after photos), you will get a sense of whether or not the surgeon is right for you. When you feel that the level of understanding and trust is there, you will feel comfortable choosing the surgeon to be your expert partner throughout your rhinoplasty journey.

What About the Price of Rhinoplasty in NYC and Nearby NJ?

You’ll notice we’ve talked a lot about costs – important ones like a happy outcome from rhinoplasty and avoiding the risk of repeating a less-than-satisfactory nose job. Those are the big costs of rhinoplasty and that’s why we haven’t delved immediately into the monetary price of your surgery.

That’s important too, but remember that the most important thing about rhinoplasty (the part that makes undergoing the surgery worthwhile) is an uneventful surgery, quick healing with the support of your surgeon and a stellar result. This is why we emphasize choosing the surgeon who is best for you to make your surgery successful and worth every penny.

We’ll even go a bit further and say that choosing a “more expensive” surgeon is well worthwhile, especially if you regret ever having met the “cheaper” surgeon because you didn’t get the result you wanted. Or even worse, if you had a completely botched rhinoplasty from an inexperienced (or uninterested) surgeon, who only received a small fee.

What difference does it make if you “saved” money when you end up with a rhinoplasty result you don’t like? In that case, you will have actually “wasted” money, time and suffered disappointment or disfigurement.

Is Bargain Rhinoplasty Really Worth It?

If you find a surgeon who offers a price tag for rhinoplasty that is much lower than most surgeons you have spoken to, ask yourself, “Why?” Often, this is because the surgeon is less experienced than most and hoping to attract patients. Check this surgeon’s record very carefully and don’t meet with him or her unless they have well-verified qualifications for a rhinoplasty surgeon in NYC and NJ, including:

  • Board certifications from the ABPS (American Board of Plastic Surgery) through the ABMS (American Bard of Medical Specialties.)
  • Valid and current license to practice medicine from the State of NY or NJ.
  • 10+ years of experience.
  • Focus on rhinoplasty (rather than offering all types of plastic surgery of the face and body.)
  • Reconstructive experience (this is advanced experience that ensures your surgeon deeply understands the form and function of the nose.)
  • Excellent results from past patients (look at “before and afters” and talk to recent patients.) Ask the patients if their breathing is improved and if they got the look they wanted.
  • Leadership role in the field of rhinoplasty (such as a position as head of department at a renowned local hospital, such as Hackensack University Medical Center.)

When you meet with NJ or NYC rhinoplasty surgeons, make sure they have:

  • The ability to discuss complex cases and complications—and describe how such cases are successfully handled.
  • Artistry (is the surgeon able to discuss the concept of classic beauty as well as individuality? Do most of the surgeon’s photos of patients appear appealing and attractive? Do their noses look appropriate—do the noses suit the faces? Do all the noses look “done,” artificial or too small? Or do the noses look natural and compliment the other facial features?)
  • Interest in you as a person and how your needs and goals differ from other patients.
  • Clear communication (shares details with you of how your specific surgery will be performed.)
  • Dedication (evaluate whether the surgeon seems honest and upfront, and whether you get the feeling that the surgeon wants to help improve your life.)
  • Easy-to-understand billing (if a surgeon has a much lower quoted price for rhinoplasty, it could be due to hidden fees.) Most experienced rhinoplasty surgeons include things like post-surgery follow-up visits for an entire year after surgery in their overall pricing. Most won’t send you a separate bill for the anesthesiologist’s services, etc. Your surgeon should be able to quote you a total bill for your surgery that includes the surgery center costs, anesthesia and follow-up—at the end of your consultation.

Upfront Pricing for NYC Rhinoplasty is a Bad Sign

Your surgeon should only quote a price after he or she has examined you, heard the details of your medical history and learned about your goals. If your surgeon advertises a price for rhinoplasty, this could mean that he or she will make your surgery (no matter how complicated or straightforward it may be) fit the price.

In other words, if your needs include a procedure that takes more time or is move complex, the surgeon might ignore those needs and just do whatever technique is fastest or simplest for him or her instead of what is best for you or right for you.

A dedicated surgeon will make the price fit the surgery. An experienced, talented and dedicated/caring surgeon will see what you want and need, make a plan and then worry about figuring the cost. With this surgeon, you can be sure that the cost will include exactly what you need to get the result you want safely and effectively.

This surgeon will think of price last, rather than first. That’s how you will end up with a rhinoplasty that is really worth it! When your result exceeds your expectations, your rhinoplasty will definitely be worthwhile, and you’ll feel that way every time you look in the mirror!
