About Breast Augmentation

The reasons women decide to undergo breast augmentation surgery varies as much as their unique body sizes and shapes. Some women seek breast augmentation, also known as breast implants, simply to make their breasts larger, while others may want to correct differences in the sizes and shape of their breasts. It is common for women to seek breast augmentation after weight loss, aging or childbirth. Breast implants may also be used for reconstructive purposes after a mastectomy.

To achieve the best results in breast augmentation, the surgery must be tailored to each individual patient. Breast augmentation surgery performed by a skilled plastic surgeon can improve breast shape and size and often results in greater self-esteem and confidence.

Although implants will often give the breasts a firmer more lifted appearance, sometimes a lift (also know as a mastopexy) is required in addition to the augmentation.

About the Procedure

Selection of the correct size and type of breast implant is critical to achieving the desired look and final results. Dr. Stephanie Cohen and Dr. Rick Winters will recommend the best implants for each patient based on the overall breast enhancement goals, body size and type, the amount of existing breast tissue and desired incision location.

Types of breast implants include:

  • Saline Implants – These have an outer silicone shell and contain sterile salt water.
  • Silicone Implants – These have an outer silicone shell and contain an elastic gel often referred to as “cohesive gel.”

Every patient’s unique needs and cosmetic goals will help determine the surgical methods utilized during breast augmentation surgery. After anesthesia, incisions are made to accommodate the insertion of the implant. Incision sites may be determined by the type and size of the implants and the patient’s wishes. A pocket is created through the incision, and often a temporary sizing implant is placed first to determine the ideal size. The sizer is then removed, and the implant is inserted and positioned. Incisions are closed or incorporated into further procedures to lift the breast.

Dr. Cohen and Dr. Winters are experienced breast augmentation surgeons in Bergen County, N.J. Each breast augmentation surgery is designed to accommodate a patient’s individual anatomy and meet their desired outcome. Doctors Cohen and Winters will help every patient achieve the look they have always wanted.

What are the Risks of Breast Implants?

Risks with breast augmentation are extremely rare, but do include bleeding, infection and scarring, which can be greatly minimized with expert care. Other breast implant risks include:

  • Capsular contracture, which is scar tissue that causes a hard shell around the breast implant or a shift of the implants position.
  • Breast and/or nipple pain.
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation.
  • Implant rupture or leakage.

Additional surgery may be needed to correct these complications.

Patients who have undergone breast augmentation surgery generally experience a rapid recovery. It is common for minor bruising and swelling to be present following surgery, which will usually subside within a few weeks. There is usually a brief period of minor activity/exercise restriction during the recovery.
