New York could be a fine place for you to have your rhinoplasty procedure. As for the very best place? The best place for rhinoplasty surgery is…wherever you find the right surgeon for you. It’s just that simple. A highly skilled, experienced and dedicated rhinoplasty specialist (in NJ or NYC) can offer you an excellent result from your rhinoplasty, whereas an inexperienced or inattentive plastic surgeon presents a big risk for the rhinoplasty patient.
Part of the reason why rhinoplasty is described as one of the more “popular” plastic surgery procedures is because so many are performed each year. Part of the reason so many are performed, however, is because many initial rhinoplasties are re-done and corrected—because the rhinoplasty patient didn’t get the result they were seeking. But you can avoid this problem—and we are here to help!
Preventing Rhinoplasty Mistakes and Lowering Risks: Go to the Best Surgeon
To ensure that you get the results you expect and deserve from your rhinoplasty, find the best surgeon, no matter where they might be. A top rhinoplasty surgeon can produce predictably good outcomes for patients—time after time. Even if the surgeon is not in your home city, traveling for rhinoplasty can be quite simple.
And it is worth the minor inconvenience in order to ensure you never have to repeat the surgery. At Cohen/Winters many of our rhinoplasty patients come from nearby NYC and from across the country, too. Our staff makes it easy to arrange a trip to NJ for rhinoplasty and an overnight stay after your surgery, if you don’t live within driving distance.
It’s particularly simple to work out NJ travel for NYC residents since you can often just drive in for surgery and have your pal drive you back home. In fact, your consultation is free of charge, so that makes it quite worthwhile to visit NJ in the initial, information-gathering phase of your rhinoplasty research.
Rhinoplasty in NYC: A NJ Surgeon’s Perspective
Dr. Cohen and I briefly considered locating our practice in NYC, years ago. It was just a brief thought, however, because we quickly realized NJ was the best place for us to provide our style of patient focused care for aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures, including rhinoplasty.
Don’t get us wrong, there are many great plastic surgeons in NYC, but we feel the patient experience suffers in NYC and, in addition, patients may suffer sticker shock.
NYC Rhinoplasty Surgery: Sticker Shock
Plastic surgery typically costs a lot more in NYC. It can be (unnecessarily) expensive for some really unimportant reasons. Things like real estate (lack of and cost of) and operating facilitates, etc. push up the costs for surgeons practicing in NY and their patients pay the price—literally.
Since these costs don’t add to the quality of your care (and may detract from it), we think it’s a shame for a patient to pay more for rhinoplasty in NYC, simply because it’s a big, crowded city.
NYC Crowds, Stress and Fast Pace – Not Great for Surgical Patients
We also feel that a big, crowded city is not a good environment for patient care, especially for an elective, non-emergency procedure, (where you have location options). The pace of NYC, along with the traffic congestion and other details (like riding crowded elevators with bandages on your face) make for a stressful rhinoplasty experience for many patients.
NJ rhinoplasty provides the best of both worlds. Since both northern NJ and NY are part of a big population center, surgeons in this entire area get a lot of experience and a wide variety of rhinoplasty cases to hone their skills. Some of the best medical schools are in this area as well. But in NJ, you can enjoy a more relaxed surgical experience and we can spend more time focusing on each patient.
The Truly Important Stuff: Superior Credentials and Experience
Look for superior credentials and experience in your rhinoplasty surgeon. These are the only things remotely worth paying extra for in plastic surgery—and where the surgeon practices has no bearing on these important background details.
So, we recommend: don’t go by the city as a an indicator of quality—check your surgeon’s background (education, board certification, licensure, surgical privileges, advanced reconstructive surgery experience, etc.) and then meet with him or her. These are the only ways to find the best rhinoplasty surgeon for you, whether in NY or NJ.
Meet With Rhinoplasty Specialists to Decide Which is the One for You
Once you have found a prospective NY or NJ rhinoplasty surgeon online or through a friend, relative or personal physician (and checked the surgeon’s credentials), schedule a meeting. At your consultation, you can ask further questions about your surgeon’s background and get into specifics about your rhinoplasty surgery.
After this meeting, you should have a sense of whether the surgeon is someone you trust and would like to work with. Make your decision based on these factors rather than location: does your NJ or NYC plastic surgeon:
- Seem interested in your rhinoplasty objectives? Your NJ or NYC rhinoplasty surgeon should ask you a lot of questions, not just answer yours. For a successful rhinoplasty procedure, your surgeon needs to clearly understand what you want from your nose job. If the plastic surgeon doesn’t appear interested in what you want, they may end up doing the surgery they find “best for you” or easiest or quickest.
- Clearly explain the surgical strategy for you? The better you understand what will be done in your surgery, the more confident you’ll feel as you go through with it. This way, you’ll know what to expect from your rhinoplasty surgery. If your surgeon doesn’t think your surgical goal is realistically achievable, he or she should tell you.
- Go over the potential rhinoplasty risks and complications? You want a surgeon who knows exactly what can go wrong and is prepared to properly deal with any complication to prevent a poor rhinoplasty outcome. This limits your risks.
- Have rhinoplasty before and after photos that appeal to you? Talk with your plastic surgeon to see if his aesthetic sense matches yours.
- Explain rhinoplasty costs? Follow up visits should be included.
- Inspire confidence? Do you trust the surgeon’s advice after having met them? Does your surgeon seem invested in your outcome? That is the surgeon to choose.
